Happy Thanksgiving!

The kitchen from The Holiday set.
Greetings! In case you thought I quit miniatures, or something equally dire, I wanted to update you and say thank you for being so patient. I've been scratch-building a corner kitchen counter and sink for the Holiday cottage out of mat board. Kris Compas, who most of you probably also follow, makes amazing minis from mat board and card stock and I've been wanting to try it. During a trip to the Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop I found a large stash of mat board for 25 cents per board! I've got enough material to fill a mini mansion. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it is actually easier than using balsa wood, glues quickly and paints up well.

For those of you celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday, I hope that you are with the favorite people in your lives making lovely memories. For the rest of you, I hope that you have a wonderful day!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving!

Your kitchen cabinets look wonderful. I adored that kitchen in the movie. I so hated hearing the house was just a hollow shell built in a field and all the rooms were sets.

  2. Thank you, Catherine! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.

I love the kitchen too. It is so cozy and I love that it has a fireplace. I think what really makes this place so inviting is all the little decorating touches, like the charming curtains and the mix of pattern.

From what I have read, people were offering the production crew lots of money for just the shell, but they wouldn't sell it. I wouldn't be surprised if someone hasn't built a replica of this place to live in for real!

  4. Good Morning,
Wonderful what treasures can be found at the Thrift Stores. I have wanted to try using the foam board for some time. Your cupboards turned out very well.
I wonder what's your next project will be with the board.
    Regards Janine

  5. Hi there!

I am going to try to make a few other pieces of furniture with the mat board. Based on Kris Compas's blog http://1inchminisbykris.blogspot.com/
anything can be made with it. It seems especially good to use if the piece is going to be painted. No one would ever know that it wasn't wood in most cases.
