Bed for the Cottage
I worked up plans to re-create Kate Winslet's bed from The Holiday. Here is a photo from the set, and the sketch I did in Adobe Illustrator:
I got a bunch of metal rings and wire from the jewelry-making aisle at the craft store, and some tiny little florets to cover the joins. If I can either glue or weld (right!) these bits together then a good coating of spray paint should give it the right look. Just curious, does anyone out there have any experience using one of those welding tools that instantly turns cold after you use it? I would only trust myself with one of those.

I have a littel sodering iron but have been to afraid to use it. Would love to see you progress on the bed as i want to make metal railings for my house. I love this movie!!! Great pics of the set!!

I took jewelry-making in art school, but was a miserable failure at it. I'm thinking I'm going to use something like crazy glue. But welding looks so easy when I watch others do it! I'll let you know what I end up doing.
ReplyDeleteAll your stuff is so cool, by the way! I love how you make the Harry Potter world come to life.
Hi Alessandra! I don't have a blog but I love miniatures. I'm just thrilled to have found your blog! The cottage is the reason I loved the movie. I will be following your blog faithfully. I admire you tremendously for undertaking the accomplishment of something as marvelous as this cottage which is so loved by the romantics among us. Thank you a million times!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the encouragement, Lucille! It is a great motivator to have some followers who love the film as much as I do. I am very excited about this project, and hope to succeed.
ReplyDeleteMy son bought one of those soldering irons that turns cold after use and it was useless. Total waste of money. I would suggest your try and regular soldering iron and just be really careful. Hope that helps
ReplyDeleteIf it helps, I made a metal bed using wire and beads - if you could get flat hexagonal beads you can use them as joiners by drilling more holes, and make your own wire rings (so they can be threaded - unless the ones you have will open), then superglue gel (and spray paint) holds the whole thing together.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to mine if you are interested. It isn't a tutorial but it might give you some more ideas of 'how to'. :)
Oops, I can't remember if I added the url!

Christine, your bed is lovely! So detailed! And you paper-pieced that quilt? How? Those pieces must be the size of a little fingernail! You actually sewed it? Wow. I checked out your other posts, and you really have a keen eye for detail. Thank you for your suggestions!
